Manchester United 5-0 Wigan Atletic

Wayne Rooney delivered another masterclass as Wigan Athletic surrendered to Manchester United for the second time this season.

Sir Alex Ferguson has argued for years that if his side are within touching distance of top spot on New Year's Day they will take some stopping.

And not only are they only two points adrift of Chelsea, they have almost achieved parity in the goal difference column too after another five-goal mauling of the hapless Latics.

Former Wigan star Antonio Valencia had a productive night, claiming three assists and scoring the final goal of the match against his old club.

But Rooney was the main man, opening United's account with his 15th goal of the season and getting himself right to the heart of a performance Wigan could not have complained about if it had brought the hosts double figures.

Hammered by five goals on home soil in August, Roberto Martinez made the short journey across Greater Manchester for the return, committed to the same open style.

The wonder was it took United almost half an hour to open their account.

best season
A flurry just beforehand had involved Chris Kirkland turning a Rooney blockbuster wide and Paul Scharner booting a Nemanja Vidic effort of the line.

Following that, Rooney's audacious shot from the most acute angle imaginable bounced back to Kirkland off the far post, the Wigan keeper having been completely bamboozled by the initial effort.

Finally, Dimitar Berbatov, who had started the bombardment by racing onto Rooney's through ball and getting chopped down in the box by Titus Bramble without winning a penalty, failed with a chip when he was clean through.

At that stage, there might have been a temptation for Wigan to think they would survive..

It will not cross Ferguson's attention that much but an entire nation of football watchers is following his main man at the moment, crossing their fingers he can deliver World Cup glory to England.

Undoubtedly he is having his best season and it was the former Everton striker who stole in at the near post to meet Rafael Da Silva's cross and steer it past Kirkland to break the deadlock.

Three minutes later Michael Carrick swept home the second after Valencia had shown enough vision to cut a pass back into his path rather than drill a cross into crowded penalty area.

powerful force
On nights like these, the former Wigan man is a powerful force. And with Rafael charging forward on the overlap, the Latics could not resist.

Rafael's only previous goal came in a disappointing defeat at Arsenal last year.
This time, after collecting Darren Fletcher's pass and showing nimble feet to create space for himself on the edge of the area before drilling past Kirkland, he had more of a reason to celebrate with twin Fabio, who pumped the air with joy from the bench, although he was ultimately to share a pitch with his brother for the first time in a league match.

A change of keeper at the break as Mike Pollitt replaced the luckless Kirkland, failed to bring a change of fortune for the visitors.

Valencia skipped past Maynor Figueroa as if he was not there, then crossed into space. Berbatov controlled instantly and turned his shot into the far corner.

Memories of that nine-goal humiliation at Tottenham Hotsput were coming back to haunt Martinez and his men.

If Rooney had managed to find the net when he got on the end of Berbatov's chip instead of thundering a header against the bar, a repeat may have been on the cards.

Instead, United were forced to wait until the 76th minute, after Ferguson had made a triple substitution, for Rooney to drive into the heart of Wigan's defence before sending Valencia through superbly to chip home a fifth.

Hull City 1-3 Manchester United

Wayne Rooney rescued Manchester United after almost playing the Barclays Premier League champions into trouble at struggling Hull City.

Rooney gave United the lead in first-half stoppage time at the KC Stadium but then gifted the home side a route back with the mistake that led to Craig Fagan's penalty equaliser.

The England striker then stepped up a gear to force an own goal from Andy Dawson and then set up a third for strike partner Dimitar Berbatov.

The hard-fought victory lifted United back above Arsenal into second and within two points of leaders Chelsea.

United welcomed back a trio of defenders in Rafael da Silva, Wes Brown and Nemanja Vidic. That gave United a much more familiar look as Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick returned to midfield roles.

United started patiently but burst into life after five minutes as Antonio Valencia charged down the right.

The Ecuador international picked out Giggs with a well-flighted cross but the Welshman's volley dipped just over Boaz Myhill's bar.

Giggs was then inches away from scoring from a 16th-minute free-kick after Rooney went down under a Kamil Zayatte challenge.

brilliant move
Hull weathered that storm and appealed for a penalty after making a rare break but Brown's challenge as Richard Garcia raced onto a Fagan ball was deemed fair.

Seyi Olofinjana tried his luck from long range for Hull but Tomasz Kuszczak was not troubled.

Rooney went close again for United as Hull waited in vain for an offside flag, forcing Myhill to palm over with a stinging shot.

Hull were unlucky not to take the lead after piecing together a brilliant move in the 28th minute.

Garcia began the attack with a weaving run before finding Fagan out wide. Fagan's perfect cross was met on the volley by Olofinjana on the six-yard line but Kuszczak saved to his right.

Hull survived a real scare when Myhill sliced a clearance but Giggs and Rooney were unable to take advantage of an unexpected opening.

The Tigers spurned another good opportunity as Olofinjana found Stephen Hunt on the left but the Irishman shot tamely across goal.

Rafael then beat the offside trap at the end of an intricate move on the edge of the Hull box but Myhill saved brilliantly from the Brazilian.

Pressure finally paid off as Hull failed to clear a Fletcher cross and Rooney tapped in from close range during two minutes of stoppage time.

bundled over
United were relieved but Rooney turned villain with a bad error just before the hour.

Rooney played Kuszczak into trouble with a weak backpass and Fagan nipped in to win the ball.

Fagan's touch took it too wide to shoot but he turned and lofted in a cross for Jozy Altidore, who was bundled over by the backtracking Rafael.

Wiley pointed to the spot and Fagan, taking over spot-kicking duties, stepped up to coolly slot an equaliser.

United almost reclaimed the lead moments later as Brown rose to meet a corner but Myhill clawed the ball away from under his bar as Rooney threatened.

Hull went close from their own corner as Garcia met a Hunt cross but his header flashed across goal.

Rooney then redeemed himself by forcing the own goal that put United back in front after 73 minutes.

Hull were caught as United broke from deep and Giggs put Rooney through. The angle was a tight one but Hull could not get back quickly enough and Rooney's cross was turned in by Dawson.

There was no way back for Hull and Berbatov finished the job eight minutes from time, although he owed much to Rooney.

The England man was allowed to stroll into the area from halfway as Hull reacted slowly to a long Vidic header and then picked out Berbatov at the far post with a measured ball. The Bulgarian had a simple task to slide home.

Paranormal Activity

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Especially if you sleep alone.

After a young, middle class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban “starter” tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night.

Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

Melayu Hari Ini?

Terkinja-kinja best giler menari macam hantu

Apa hobi orang Melayu
Terkenal dengan budaya malas dan lesu
Berlepak buang masa tak jemu-jemu
Tengok telenovela dari Filipina dan Peru
Berpusu-pusu pergi tengok pamiran hantu
Sambil makan junk food, kuaci dan muruku
Sibuk bercerita tentang Datuk K dapat bini baru
Apa pakaian Siti nak pakai itu pun nak tahu
Mana tak gendut berpenyakit selalu
Kalau nak berlagak Melayu masih nombor satu

Kenapa Melayu jadi begitu?

Fulham 3-0 Manchester United

Manchester United's pursuit of the Barclays Premier League title suffered a setback with a thrashing at Craven Cottage inspired by Bobby Zamora.

Danny Murphy opened the scoring from 30-yards after capitalising on an error by Paul Scholes and Zamora continued his rich vein of form with the second a minute after the interval.

It was Zamora's fifth goal in four matches and he heard his name chanted as he left the pitch to a standing ovation.

The former West Ham United marksman - a menace all afternoon - had helped complete the rout of the champions by setting-up the third for Damien Duff in the 76th minute.

Just as worrying for United side as their second Barclays Premier League defeat in three matches was the knowledge they were overwhelmed in every department.

Lacking in imagination and confidence, their crippling injury list has clearly caught up with them as they missed the chance to draw level with Chelsea at the top of the table and suffered a fifth loss of the season.

Nemanja Vidic's failure to recover from a calf strain forced Sir Alex Ferguson to once again field a makeshift defence, which was repeatedly exposed by Fulham.

With Jonny Evans, John O'Shea, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown in the treatment room, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Ritchie De Laet were asked to form a flimsy three-man rearguard.

wonderful move
Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen started in attack but the latter was anonymous and even when Dimitar Berbatov stepped off the bench in the second half they were toothless.

The result has strengthened Fulham's reputation as the scourge of the big four - earnt last season - and registered their second successive victory against United.

In March they beat Sir Alex Ferguson's side for the first time in 45 years by the same scoreline but this triumph was more comprehensive in every aspect.

As early as the 17th minute Fulham looked capable of emulating last season's heroics against the Red Devils thanks to a wonderful move started by Clint Dempsey.

The American floated in a long pass to Zamora who expertly chested the ball down into the path of Zoltan Gera but the Hungarian directed his shot too close to goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak when he had the goal at his mercy.

Duff should have produced a better conclusion to one run into the box but Fulham only had to wait until the 22nd minute to storm into the lead when they capitalised on an error by Scholes.

Fletcher passed to Scholes but the former England midfielder was too slow in reacting, allowing Murphy to snatch the ball from his feet and fire a 30-yard effort into the net.

Zamora should have made it 2-0 but nodded Gera's precision cross wide from six yards out after doing the hard work in outjumping Fletcher.

far post
Quick thinking from Evra and Rooney created a half-chance for Anderson but Fulham reacted so rapidly to the threat that by the time he pulled the trigger he was blocked by a wall of white shirts.

United's problems deepened a minute into the second half when their patched-up defence was unpicked once more as Fulham extended their lead.

Duff supplied the cross to the far post where Dempsey was able to deflect the ball into the path of Zamora who rifled home from close range.

In desperate need of inspiration, a lacklustre United brought on Berbatov for Gibson and switched to a three-pronged strike force.

Needing a third goal to kill-off United, who were showing tentative signs of a fightback, Duff obliged in the 75th minute.

The visitors failed to clear their lines, allowing the brilliant Zamora to set-up Duff who smashed the ball home from 15 yards out.

Delirious Fulham fans chanted "we want four, we want four" and Zamora would have given it to them had Kuszczak not made a superb late save.

Manchester United 3-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Manchester United beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy made 10 changes from the side that defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 last weekend and Wolves paid the price at Old Trafford.

For half an hour the hardy band of travelling fans had plenty to cheer as their representatives gave everything in the Wolverhampton cause.

If Rooney had taken the third-minute opening that presented itself when Darron Gibson's shot crashed into him, the defeat could have been far worse for Wolves.

low cross
Instead, Marcus Hahnemann, the one player to keep his place from White Hart Lane, made a close-range save, as he did to deny the England striker when he got on the end of Patrice Evra's low cross midway through the half.

United won a penalty when Ronald Zubar rose to head away Gibson's corner under minimal pressure and instead punched it out of the area.

Having been so lethargic before, Rooney upped the pace by drilling home his 13th goal of the season from the penalty spot.

Once in front, there was never any real suggestion United would not join Chelsea at the Barclays Premier League summit, having failed in that objective against Aston Villa at the weekend.

enough power
On his first league start, Gabriel Obertan was guilty of taking too much time to get his crosses in, a failing that Cristiano Ronaldo received a few admonishments for earlier in his career.

If the young French winger needed any proof the direct route was best, he got it when Vidic rose highest at a Gibson corner and got enough power into his header to carry it over the line, even though Hahnemann attempted a goal-line block.

The effort secured victory and the hosts knew it, which probably explained the sense of lethargy that gripped them at the start of the second period.

Vidic's departure was the most notable aspect of that period. The defender did raise his hands to say he was willing to continue after originally indicating a desire to come off and Sir Alex Ferguson will be hopeful of having him fit for Saturday's testing trip to Fulham.

It did not matter on this occasion, though, and the scene was set for a brilliant piece of skill from Dimitar Berbatov.

The Bulgarian first collected Paul Scholes' lofted pass before delivering a brilliant overhead kick into the path of Valencia, who drove a first-time shot into the roof of the net.

Manchester United 0-1 Aston Villa

Manchester United failed to produce any late heroics this time as Gabriel Agbonlahor's first-half goal earned Aston Villa their first Old Trafford win since 1983.

Sir Alex Ferguson described Federico Macheda's sensational injury-time effort in the corresponding fixture last term as the defining moment of United's season.

It is too early for Agbonlahor's header to be described in the same way, but on a day when United were in action after Chelsea had stumbled unexpectedly on home soil, it was a poor result for the hosts.

Although Villa headed north without a win for so long, they did have the confidence of victories against both Chelsea and Liverpool this season to fall back on.

And while Villa themselves might not have enjoyed the best of times against United of late, Agbonlahor has not done too badly.

The England striker had scored in the past three seasons against the Red Devils, so he was completing a rather impressive four-timer when he nodded home Ashley Young's right-wing cross.

inspired pass
Agbonlahor had already shown impressive strength to hold off Wes Brown, then spotted his opportunity after rolling a pass to Young, darting into the space where he expected the cross to come.

The cross duly came and, with Kuszczak in no man's land, Agbonlahor steered his header into the net.

It could quite easily have been two by half-time as Agbonlahor harried Darren Fletcher off the ball after the Scot had received a pass he was not expecting from Kuszczak.

Instead of going for goal himself he unselfishly tried to present Emile Heskey with a tap-in. This time Kuszczak redeemed himself.

United were not exactly a muted force, it was just that their efforts tended to be half-chances rather than clear opportunities.

Antonio Valencia was a threat but was caught on his heels when Wayne Rooney flicked an inspired pass to the near post.

low cross
And it was Rooney who saw his shot crash off the bar after a brilliant piece of close control when he received Patrice Evra's low cross.

United's efforts were underwhelming enough for Ferguson to introduce Michael Owen at the break.

Like Ryan Giggs, it was a rare off-day for Rooney, who failed to take a couple of those half-chances that kept coming United's way.

If that was not bad enough, after flattening Downing, Rooney raced at the Villa goal then overhit a through-ball intended for Dimitar Berbatov.

Not that the Bulgarian had anyone to blame but himself when Michael Carrick charged forward on the overlap and invited the finish with a precise cut-back.

It looked certain to be the equaliser, but Berbatov failed to make a proper connection.

Downing was perfectly placed to boot a Vidic header off the line with 10 minutes remaining as the match entered the phase where last year Villa's victory hopes were so cruelly snatched away from them.

Portsmouth 1-4 Manchester United

Avram Grant's reign at Chelsea ended with defeat on penalties to Manchester United and his first match in charge of Portsmouth saw Red Devils forward Wayne Rooney score two crucial spot-kicks within his hat-trick at Fratton Park.

Grant, who has taken over from Paul Hart and will be rubber-stamped as manager next week when paperwork is completed, could not have asked for a tougher opening match than against the Barclays Premier League champions but there was hope of a result when Kevin-Prince Boateng levelled, also with a penalty.

Sir Alex Ferguson will have no complaints with the way Rooney wrapped up the points after the break. Ryan Giggs added the fourth late on.

Grant and Ferguson last faced each other 18 months ago during the Champions League final in Moscow when John Terry lost his footing in the penalty shoot-out and Chelsea let the European crown slip away.

There was a downpour on this occasion too. This time Grant was in charge of a team that started the weekend bottom of the league and three points from their nearest rivals, while Ferguson was looking to gain ground on leaders Chelsea.

Paul Scholes had the first effort of the match, firing over when Giggs rolled a corner to the edge of the penalty area where his team-mate was left unmarked.

block bravely
Pompey threatened within a minute and Tomasz Kuszczak, in because Edwin van der Sar had a knock to his knee, was required to block bravely when a ball was lobbed over the top of United's defence and found Aruna Dindane.

Encouraged by this opening, Dindane also fired wide from long distance and headed off-target when unmarked from Jamie O'Hara's cross. O'Hara himself had an effort tipped over after Frederic Piquionne nodded in his direction on the edge of the area.

Despite the Pompey attacks, United were ahead in the 25th minute through Rooney.

Antonio Valencia burst forward and exchanged passes with Rooney, and when the winger pulled the ball back for his team-mate in the penalty area, the England forward waited for a clumsy challenge to arrive from Michael Brown.

Dean pointed to the spot immediately and Rooney tucked away the penalty.

Pompey were level, however, on the half-hour mark. Kuszczak climbed above Piquionne, who appeared to have his shirt pulled by Nemanja Vidic.

finish home
With United in shock, Boateng smashed in the penalty after missing against Stoke City last time out.
Pompey enjoyed a spell of pressure before the break but United were ahead three minutes after the restart.

There was nothing controversial about this effort, just Giggs weighting the ball perfectly through Pompey's defence for Rooney to place his finish home, his 10th of the season for United.

His hat-trick came in the 54th minute, from the penalty spot. Piquionne was penalised for fouling Giggs - and Rooney sent Begovic the wrong way from 12 yards.

Valencia could have added to the goals when he waltzed through the Pompey defence.

Boateng had Pompey's best chance to get back in the match but he fired over from a promising position, and there would be no way back for Grant's men.

Giggs netted with a free-kick three minutes from full-time for their fourth goal, while John Utaka hit the crossbar with a scissors-kick at the death for Pompey.

Beşiktaş triumph at Old Trafford

Manchester United 0-1 Beşiktaş JK

Beşiktaş JK may have already been eliminated from this season's UEFA Champions League but they at least made their mark on the tournament after becoming the first away team to win at Old Trafford in the competition since 2005 thanks to Rodrigo Tello's solitary strike.

Famous scalp
United had gone 23 matches unbeaten here in Europe but after rescuing a two-goal deficit late in their preceding outing against PFC CSKA Moskva, their proud record finally fell as the Turkish champions claimed their first UEFA Champions League away victory in six years. In truth, the hosts were already assured of reaching the last 16, hence Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to make eight changes from his side's last Premier League game, but that is unlikely to dampen the celebrations of those Beşiktaş fans who had endured an 8-0 thrashing at Liverpool FC on their previous trip to England.

Bottom-placed Beşiktaş knew only a win would keep alive their faint hopes of taking third place in the section, following PFC CSKA Moskva's early-evening victory. Though penned inside their half for much of the opening phase – when Nemanja Vidić was off target with a header – they gave their noisy supporters something to sing about as Tello fired them in front on 20 minutes. When a United attack broke down outside the Beşiktaş box, Matteo Ferrari sent İsmail Köybaşı away down the left. After passing the halfway line he delivered a crossfield ball to Tello yet there still seemed minimal danger as the Chilean cut infield some 35 metres out. However, with Rafael stepping back, Tello let fly and his shot glanced off the full-back and arced past Ben Foster into the far corner.

Defiant keeper
United responded with Daniel Welbeck and Federico Macheda – the teenage strikers spearheading a much-changed team – combining cleverly to get the latter behind the visiting back line but he failed to get his low cross past Rüştü Reçber. The veteran goalkeeper had conceded six on his last visit here with Fenerbahçe SK in 2004 and would have been grateful for Sir Alex Ferguson resting Wayne Rooney. Though United dominated possession they struggled to create chances, with Rüştü equal to the best of them, saving Gabriel Obertan's near-post effort after Welbeck had played in the winger.

The hard-working Fabian Ernst was catching the eye in the Beşiktaş midfield and his fellow German Michael Fink nearly doubled the lead four minutes before half-time. The visitors opened up the United rearguard as Tello slipped a ball infield to Bobô and his touch let in Fink, whose side-footed shot went behind off the post. United had fought back in their two preceding home matches and as the second half unfolded, they began to apply pressure, Obertan drawing a fingertip save with a low drive, then nodding on to the roof of the net.

Late scares
On came Michael Owen, Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra but it took until added time for United to seriously threaten an equaliser, Rüştü making a flying stop to tip over Macheda's header, then turning away Wes Brown's header from the resulting corner. United must now wait for their trip to VfL Wolfsburg next month to settle who finishes top of Group B.

Manchester United 3-0 Everton

Darren Fletcher added another memorable entry to his bulging CV as he launched Manchester United on their way to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Everton.

Although they were already well on top against the Merseysiders who, apart from a brief five-minute second-half flurry were completely outclassed, United were struggling to make the breakthrough until Fletcher fired home a magnificent volley.

Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia were also on target to complete the Red Devils' biggest win since August and ensure they heeded Sir Alex Ferguson's pre-match call for a more clinical attitude.

Over the past 12 months, Fletcher has emerged as one of the most influential players in the Barclays Premier League.

The Scot's style might not be to everyone's taste but his value to the Red Devils is immeasurable, to the point he was shifted to right-back when Paul Scholes was introduced after an hour.

Indeed, May's sobering Champions League final defeat to Barcelona in May was part of a sequence that has seen Fletcher miss seven of United's last nine defeats.

His effectiveness, it has to be admitted, is mostly destructive.

However, he scored twice in the thrilling derby win over Manchester City in September and Fletcher is making a point of getting himself into goalscoring positions more often.

relatively relaxed
He did not exactly have the Everton goal at his mercy though as Antonio Valencia stretched to nod a deep Patrice Evra cross into his path 10 minutes before the break.

On the edge of the area, surrounded by visiting defenders, David Moyes might even have been relatively relaxed.

How wrong he would have been. With one swinging boot of the right foot, Fletcher sent the ball curling into the top corner, giving former team-mate Tim Howard no chance.

The goal at least provided United with some tangible reward for their overwhelming domination of possession.
Chances were at a premium, with Wayne Rooney going close and Ryan Giggs testing Howard, both efforts from the edge of the area.

Ferguson could not have had that in mind when he penned programme notes that called for a more clinical edge and a return to the form that saw United score five at Wigan Athletic, three at Tottenham Hotspur and four to beat neighbours City.

Indeed, Everton, for all their failure to keep hold of the ball, also had a couple of decent long-range efforts, through Jack Rodwell and Louis Saha - returning to Old Trafford for the first time since calling time on his four-and-a-half injury-plagued years at the start of last season..

high standards
The introduction of Ayegbeni Yakubu for Dan Gosling took a while to have an impact but for a five-minute spell just after the hour mark, it had the hosts in trouble.

Everton's best chance fell to the Nigerian himself after he had muscled his way round Wes Brown.

Yakubu has scored for three previous clubs - Maccabi Haifa, Portsmouth and Middlesbrough - against United and must have thought he had completed a remarkable four-timer when he sent his shot fizzing towards the bottom corner.

Edwin Van der Sar was struggling but, unfortunately for the visitors, it went just wide.

It was just the invitation United needed to seal the contest.

By his own high standards, Giggs had endured a quiet evening.

But, in exactly the right position to retrieve a Rooney shot that would have gone for a throw, the veteran Welshman quickly spotted Carrick on the edge of the area.

It is just the situation Carrick thrives on and he placed a low, precise shot into the corner, again leaving Howard helpless.

Valencia bagged a third when he strode on to Scholes' lay-off to ensure United remained five points adrift of Chelsea.

Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

Captain John Terry put Chelsea five points clear of Manchester United at the top of the Barclays Premier League with a second-half winner at Stamford Bridge.

Terry glanced home a 76th minute free-kick from Frank Lampard although United claimed Didier Drogba was in an offside position.

United had their chances with Wayne Rooney twice going close but the Blues made it a club record of 11 straight home wins.

It was the home side who created the first goal attempt when Branislav Ivanovic burst down the right flank and let fly with a left-foot shot which Edwin van der Sar did well to hold at the near post.

United though were far more comfortable on the ball with the home side given little time to build from the back.

But a long cross from Michael Ballack in the 18th minute found the lurking Drogba on the edge of the six-yard box but the Ivory Coast striker failed to direct his header on target.

United, despite their dominance, had not created a clear cut chance.

In the 23rd minute, Chelsea won a free-kick but Lampard failed to test the United defence when he sent his curling effort beyond the far post.

curling shot
Drogba was fouled by Wes Brown in the 27th minute in a central position 25 yards from goal.

It was another chance for the home side but again Lampard's free-kick was poor as he sent his effort straight into United's defensive wall.

Moments later Nicolas Anelka tried to beat Van der Sar from 35 yards but the United keeper dealt with it most comfortably.

Van der Sar was tested again when he made a one-handed save to keep out a curling shot from Anelka in the 32nd minute.

A quick counter attack from Chelsea saw Anelka put Deco free on the right flank but his cross eluded Ballack before arriving at the feet of Drogba.

The striker was unable to control the ball and it ran harmlessly into the arms of Van der Sar.

Drogba then broke into the penalty from the right flank but his angled drive ended in the upper tier of the stand as referee Martin Atkinson brought proceedings to a finish for the opening period.

In the 50th minute Drogba got the better of United's John O'Shea but his 25-yard shot went wide of the target.

fierce shot
Ivanovic was booked for a foul on Giggs in the 57th minute as the match began to open-up.

Ricardo Carvalho managed to get his body in the way of a fierce shot from Darren Fletcher moments later. It was a fine piece of defending by the Chelsea man.

A cross from Anelka fell kindly to Lampard on the edge of the penalty area but the England midfielder's shot was easily saved by Van der Sar.

Chelsea had gone over 14 hours since they last conceded a goal at Stamford Bridge.

It was time for the home side to make a change and Carlo Ancelotti opted to remove Deco in favour of Joe Cole, who was celebrating his 28th birthday.

Rooney should have punished Chelsea in the 66th minute when he took a return pass from Antonio Valencia on the edge of the penalty area. But the England striker sent his shot a foot wide of the far post.

Seconds later Rooney brought a fine save from Petr Cech with a 20-yard curler which was destined for the top corner until the Czech international intervened.

Chelsea were in front in the 76th minute when Ashley Cole was fouled by Fletcher on the left flank.

Captain Terry rose to glance Lampard's free-kick into the corner of the net but United were furious that Drogba appeared to be in an offside position as the ball bounced beyond Van der Sar and into the net.

United comeback seals progress

Manchester United 3-3 PFC CSKA Moskva

Goals in the final six minutes from Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia took Manchester United FC into the UEFA Champions League first knockout round and denied PFC CSKA Moskva a famous win at Old Trafford.

United have not lost at home in the competition since February 2005 but that record looked set to fall when Alan Dzagoev, Miloš Krasić and Vasili Berezutski gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage. Yet after Paul Scholes had headed a goal back with six minutes remaining, Antonio Valencia rescued a point when his long-range shot deflected off Georgi Schennikov. It was tough on visiting goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, who had made a string of fine saves, and CSKA then lost Deividas Šemberas to a red card but the ten men at least held on for a well-earned point on a remarkable competition debut for new coach Leonid Slutski. United are through while CSKA need to beat VfL Wolfsburg in Moscow on 25 November to close the three-point gap to second in Group B and keep their hopes alive.

The portents hardly favoured a CSKA side with just one win from 13 previous UEFA Champions League away games and whose new coach Slutski had lost to Irish minnows Saint Patrick's Athletic FC on his last trip to the British Isles with former club PFC Krylya Sovetov Samara in July. Yet, urged by captain Akinfeev to emulate compatriots FC Rubin Kazan's shock win at FC Barcelona, they almost caught United cold inside the opening minutes. A three-on-two break ended with Dzagoev shooting over and Šemberas was equally wayward after riding a couple of tackles minutes later.

Acute angle

A long list of missing regulars subdued United but still they had chances. Owen missed his kick when teed up by Valencia, then Darren Fletcher and Federico Macheda – the former back from injury, the latter appearing for the first time in the competition – sent shots centimetres wide. With 25 minutes played CSKA broke the deadlock. Tomáš Necid laid the ball off wth his chest to Dzagoev 30 metres from goal and the 19-year-old headed for the United area. Pulling clear of Jonny Evans, he looked to have carried the ball too far wide only to lash past Edwin van der Sar from an acute angle.

United stunned

Owen appeared to have restored the natural order when he struck from close range after Nani had flicked on Valencia's cross, his first goal in the competition since October 2004. Yet within two minutes CSKA were back in front, Necid flicking on for Krasić to beat the offside trap and round Van der Sar to score. Although Macheda and Scholes both tested Akinfeev's reflexes, CSKA stunned United with a third goal two minutes after half-time as Berezutski profited from slack marking at the far post to head in Dzagoev's free-kick.

Rooney on
On came new father Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra but United could find no way past Akinfeev who repelled Scholes's free-kick and then produced a fabulous double save to keep out Owen's header and Rooney's follow-up. United were now laying siege to the CSKA goal and after Macheda's header hit the post, Akinfeev denied Rooney again, yet the goalkeeper was powerless in the dramatic conclusion to an absorbing contest.

Manchester United 2-0 Blackburn Rovers

Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney made sure Manchester United got back on track in the Barclays Premier League after the defeat by Liverpool.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side had enough chances to notch up a bigger scoreline but substitute Gabriel Obertan missed a couple of great opportunities.

Berbatov made the breakthrough in the 55th minute but it was not until two minutes from time Rooney made the points safe.

It means they keep the pressure on Chelsea and Arsenal at the top of the table in their aim to win a fourth successive title.

United must have wondered how they were still on level terms at half-time given the amount of possession they enjoyed.

As early as the third minute Nani sent a 20-yard shot whistling past the post following a marvellous crossfield pass from Wes Brown.

good position
A mistake by Blackburn Rovers defender Chris Samba let in Antonio Valencia 10 minutes later but he failed to take advantage and scuffed a shot off target.

It was a clear opportunity and Blackburn looked nervous at the back at this stage following the 5-0 loss to Chelsea last weekend and nine straight defeats on the road.

However the visitors responded in the 21st minute and El-Hadji Diouf got into a good position, only for John O'Shea to make a crucial interception.

United stepped up the pressure and Pascal Chimbonda did well to block a shot from Berbatov in the 29th minute after Patrice Evra played the ball in.

A minute later Berbatov nearly made the breakthrough with a downward header following a cross from Valencia.

However goalkeeper Paul Robinson reacted superbly and turned the Bulgarian's effort over the bar.

Blackburn responded and Samba peeled away from his marker as David Dunn delivered the corner, only to head wide of the target.

It was brief respite for the visitors as Berbatov was again denied by Robinson in the 34th minute after being set up by Rooney.

pushed forward
This was a difficult spell for Blackburn and Berbatov found the net after Rooney had squared the ball to him in the 40th minute, only to be ruled offside.

Then Nani misdirected his header from inside the area following a corner from Valencia as Blackburn held out until half-time.

United pushed forward in the 53rd minute after Nani won the ball off Gael Givet.

The midfielder attempted to release Rooney but the pass was misplaced and the move broke down.

Anderson then picked out Evra, who had raced into the area, only for his touch to let him down and Robinson was able to collect.

United made the breakthrough when Berbatov showed good skill when he got on the end of a cross from Evra.

He got the better of Ryan Nelsen, twisting and turning before sending a shot beyond Robinson for his fourth goal of the season.

United manager Ferguson decided to make a change after 64 minutes, bringing on Obertan for the ineffective Nani.

effort wide
Obertan made a delayed debut in the Carling Cup victory against Barnsley in midweek after recovering from a back injury.

He almost made a dream start in the 67th minute following a defence splitting pass by Anderson.

Former Bordeaux winger Obertan raced away only to send a weak shot into the arms of a grateful Robinson.

Berbatov came off in the 79th minute and was replaced by Michael Owen, who scored in the cup victory against Barnsley.

United should have extended their lead in the 83rd minute but Obertan again fluffed his lines. Clear in front of goal as Valencia played the ball into his path, he snatched at the chance and sent his effort wide.

Obertan then had a hand in United's second goal in the 88th minute when he found Anderson on the left flank.

The Brazilian sent a good ball into the area and Rooney was the first to react with a sweet finish.

Substitute Nikola Kalinic found the net for Blackburn in stoppage time but his effort was ruled offside before Owen sent a shot wide.
